You know though, that was my first impression too.  Sorry.  It really was the very first thing that popped into my head.  I don’t even know why… except that there were a couple things about the incident that made me think the guy might have been programmed to wreck mayhem and terror: he was a neurosciences student and he was described as eerily calm, silent, and methodical while he carried out the attacks; almost like an automaton.  The technology for programming people to do things they’d never consider intheir normal frame of mind has existed since the Cold War.  Various methods are employed, drugs being one of them (this being what LSD was originally developed for and tested on college students), another being an apllication of certain sound frequencies in a controlled situation.  The mind can be blanked out for a time and new instructions thereby inserted that the conscious mind will have no awareness of whatsoever.  I’m not saying he should could free though if this is the case.  A compromised brain is still a very dangerous thing whether it was by the individual’s choice or not.
