  • Going under

I have an endoscopy (upper) scheduled for tomorrow (Monday).  I have a hiatal hernia and my doctor wants to make sure that’s all I have going on because I often wake up with heartburn even though I am on Prevacid and have been taking it for about ten years.  I thought I was going for an upper G.I. (you know, where you have to drink barium) but nope.  Going to be under general anesthesia while they look with a scope.

  • I’ll be thinking of you!  When Rick had his colonoscopy earlier this year, they did an endoscope at the same time.  They told me his throat would be sore afterwards, but it really wasn’t.  He wanted to go to Red Robin for lunch afterwards, so I made him have a milkshake I think more for me than for him!  (though he didn’t mind the milkshake, either)

I really pushed him to have the endoscope done because he was waking up in the middle of the night with heartburn a lot.  I had an uncle who had the same symptoms and then died of a heart attack – apparently that is one of the symptoms.  Fortunately with Rick it turned out that the acid reflux is not uncommon for people with sleep apnea, plus it turns out that a valve doesn’t close all the way, which allows the acid reflux.  Prevacid works for him…..when he remembers to take it!

  • Good luck.   I’ve never had one of those.    Post when you feel like it after the procedure and let us know how you are.

  • @Tyche - I have a slight hiatal hernia, and often have heartburn at night.  I think it’s mostly when I eat too close to bedtime.  I also have sleep apnea.  A couple of times I woke up choking on the acid.  It can be scary.  I didn’t have a sore throat.  In fact, I didn’t feel anything at all except I was in the procedure room one minute and the next I was in recovery area where Roger was waiting to help me get ready to leave.  Prevacid is a must for me.  If I don’t take it, I have heartburn before lunch.

  • @ItsSuze - Very simple procedure.  They put you in a “twilight” state so you don’t know what is going on.  It takes 20 minutes for the prep (paperwork, changing, IV, etc.) and 5 minutes for the procedure.  My appointment was for 11:15 and I was home before noon.  But still groggy.  A nice excuse for a day of World of Warcraft and no work!

  • @SherylM - Ha ha – maybe 2 days of WoW?    Glad to hear it went well.

  • @ItsSuze - I usually have WoW on my other computer when I’m working so I can play while I’m waiting for things to happen (like not being able to start on a project until I get a particular file or set of instructions, etc.)
